How Much Can You Overpay on Your HSBC UK Mortgage?

This guide is for general information only and does not provide financial advice. Check your lender’s terms before overpaying, as early repayment charges may apply. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

HSBC UK says that on a fixed-rate mortgage you have an annual overpayment allowance, equivalent to 10% of the outstanding balance of your mortgage, and that anything over 10% will incur an early repayment charge.

Lender terms change, and your own mortgage offer is what applies to you. This page was checked on 30 September 2026 against HSBC UK’s own page, linked below.

This page reports what HSBC UK publishes on its own site. It is general information, not advice and not a statement of your own mortgage terms. See our editorial policy for how we source and re-check lender facts.

What HSBC UK says about the yearly allowance

HSBC UK says that on a fixed-rate mortgage you have an annual overpayment allowance, equivalent to 10% of the outstanding balance of your mortgage, and that anything over 10% will incur an early repayment charge.

If you have a fixed-rate mortgage, you’ll have an annual overpayment allowance (AOA), which is the amount you can overpay each year without incurring any charges.

Your AOA is equivalent to 10% of the outstanding balance of your mortgage.

Anything over 10% will incur an early repayment charge (ERC).

When the allowance resets

HSBC UK says the allowance resets annually, either on the date your mortgage account was opened or, if you have switched rates before, on the start date of your fixed-rate period.

It will reset annually, either on the date your mortgage account was opened, or on the start date of your fixed-rate period if you’ve previously switched mortgage rates.

What HSBC UK says about early repayment charges

HSBC UK says its early repayment charge is calculated as 1% of the amount repaid early above the annual allowance for each remaining year of the period during which the charge applies, reducing daily, and that it is capped at 5% on a 10-year fixed rate product.

The ERC is calculated as 1% of the amount repaid early, above any annual overpayment allowance, for each remaining year of the period during which the ERC applies, reducing on a daily basis.

However, if you’re on a 10-year fixed rate product, the ERC is capped at 5%.

Tracker and variable rate mortgages

HSBC UK says that with a tracker or variable rate mortgage there are no limits or charges for making overpayments.

If you have a tracker or variable rate, there are no limits or charges for making overpayments.

How to check your own allowance

HSBC UK says you can see your current allowance in its mobile app, in online banking, or by phone.

To find out what your current overpayment allowance is, log into the HSBC UK Mobile app and select your mortgage account, then choose ‘Make an overpayment’. You can also view this in your online banking or you can give us a call.
